Masks Make Great Accessories for the Home |
with Daphne from Ft. Lauderdale, FL
How long have you been collecting these items?
Not long. I've only started about 5 years ago. And I still don't have nearly the amount I want.
Give us a little background on your collection
Well it's very diverse. Some of the pieces were gifts that friends brought back from Africa and others are finds that I've made myself.
How did you develop an interest in this particular collection?
I visited the home of a fabulous interior designer by the name of Cecil Hayes and she had such beautiful pieces, I thought that having a few would add some character to my place.
What approach did you take in starting this particular collection?
Actually, the first piece I owned was a gift from my best friend from her travels to South Africa. For a long time I just had the one piece because I didn't know where the next one would come from. I wasn't traveling to Africa myself any time soon. : ) So one day I was in a discount store, either Ross or TJ Maxx or something like that, and they actually had some authentic African masks in their home decor department. They were very inexpensive so I made it a habit of always checking out the home decor department when I visited such stores.

What are your favorite specialty items in your collection?
My favorite items would have to be the masks that have their own stands attached to them. I have a Buddha mask that I found at Target and an African one I found there as well. I think these two are my favorites. I like these because I don't have to hang them. I love being able to decorate a table top or shelf as opposed to just the walls.
What other collections or hobbies do you have?
I also collect shot glasses and cultural jewelry. You'll be seeing those soon on MyCloset.com! Just stay tuned!
How do you choose the items in your collection?
I try to only get pieces that I really, really love. There are so many available now. I've even gotten two of my favorites from Target, believe or not. If I didn't choose the ones that I absolutely loved, I would probably own hundreds of them by now. And I actually think about where the piece will go before I purchase a new one.
What do you plan on doing next with this collection?
I would like to create a wall of masks in one room of my home. I think it would look so chic to have a whole wall of strategically placed masks from all different parts of the world.
