While a student at Chelsea College of Art & Design, British born Georgina Chapman met Keren Craig (the other half of Marchesa). In 2004 they launched Marchesa, named after Marchesa Luisa Casati an Italian aristocrat best known for walking around Venice naked underneath her furs. Casati saw herself as a work of art and to some extent Chapman identifies with this sentiment which is evident in her designs and personal style. Her dresses typically feature built-in corsets, elaborate beading, and/or hand placed feathers. Within a few years of starting Marchesa, the company was named one of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund's top ten finalists. The designs are now being worn by some of Hollywood’s leading ladies including, Jennifer Lopez, Cate Blanchett, Jessica Alba, and Renée Zellweger.

Multitasking is second nature for Georgina Chapman, who can list model, actor and fashion/costume designer on her CV. For Chapman, 'it's all about acting and clothes and to choose between the two is difficult; 'it would be like being asked to give up one of your children,' says the 29-year-old. 'And it works well: one seems to feed off the other.' In 2004, Georgina met her future husband, Harvey Weinstein, cofounder of Weinstein Co. and Miramax.
