New York 's “It Girl”: Genevieve Jones
It’s always springtime for Genevieve Jones. Last March she had been named “Vogue’s It Girl of the Moment.” And she’s often dressed in Zac Posen or Calvin Klein at art balls and fashion fetes. Now that she’s crossing from professional social maven to jewelry and bag designer, natural elements still come into play.
Her jewelry line of rings and earrings, made in Bali, are based on surf and sand. Her closet was the real tip off. Gen, raised in Louisiana, wears a sleeveless white Victorian with sandals to run day errands. She can whip from jeans and rock tee to vintage kimonos and Azzedine heels in a hot flash, then back to a paisley day frock. Like Spring, she tends to her wardrobe like items in bloom.
Genevieve grew up in Baton Rouge, where her British-born father works as a chemical engineer at Exxon Mobil Corp. Her mother Patricia, who was born in Trinidad, is a homemaker.
In 1998, she moved to Manhattan's Lower East Side to a studio apartment, financed by her parents. "I lied to them and told them I was going to college," she says. "But I didn't know what I wanted. I just knew I was trying to figure things out." She did odd jobs at artists' studios, stretching canvases, for example.
