DESIGNER'S DOORWAY

Blayne Walsh

W
e knew him as Blayne From Seattle on Project Runway, but he is really a small-town boy from central Washington State, a place where North Face rules…which kind of drove Blayne to break out. “It’s about function. I’m not about that. I have the opportunity to stick out with color, making casual – hot.” He new collection’s eye-popping colors and unexpected combinations are unusual, for sure, but would the “real” person wear them? They will if they know what’s good for them, in the world according to Blayne. “I want people to go out and look awesome.”

Hot pink! Why not? It’s such an alive color.
– Blayne Walsh
Blayne’s intentions are fantastic, in both design and heart. He debuted his new collection and sold off several original pieces to benefit food banks and families in need. Two hoodies went for $350 apiece. The splashy gray dip dress (no color here, but the skin was a scene-stealer) went for $200. A white, pink and magenta dress sold for $150, and a man’s ensemble of a purple tank with feathers and skinny jeans in magenta sold for $200.

Clearly, some fashionistas wanting to break out of the “all-black” box knew this was an opportunity to do it with a splash.

Use of color is nothing new, as big name designers bring it to their collections every year. One of Blayne’s favorite designers, John Galiano, does it all the time. “He’s incredible. He’s a big influence for me. He’s not scared and uses color – crazy, bold and exciting.”
